Being Postive - The Right Attitude

from: Audrey Roberts

Golf is a complex game and it's about more than the shots you make or the clubs you use. If it was just down to that we would all be single figure players!

Did you know that we talk to ourselves up to 70% of the time ( not out loud - thank heavens), but in our minds - it's called 'thinking'. From the moment we get up we start. Sometimes it shows in our faces and a friend may say 'what are you thinking about?'.

When we play golf it is really important what we 'think' to ourselves. I bet you can recall hearing some of the following comments:- This hole isn't good for me - Water is like a magnet to my ball - That's the bunker I can never get out of - My score always goes downhill when I hit the 17th!.

So why bother to play at all, because just as soon as it happens we cry ' I told you that was going to happen.' You shouldn't be at all surprised - you had said before you played what was going to happen, and it did. So what you need to do now is to start and take those negative thoughts and turn them into positive ones.

What's stopping us being positive?

Well it's simple, we have 'thought barriers' and they are not always easy to recognize. We can be the most positive and confident person at home or work. So when we step onto a golf course, why is it that the different person takes over?

Do you recognize any of these:

She plays off 10, I have no chance. Of course she will know the rules, she's played for 18 years. I don't have the same confidence that these youngsters have. On some days I just don't seem to be lucky. I never seem to be able to get over the water.

All these phrases we have heard at sometime and are negative thoughts. You're not giving yourself a chance because you start off with a negative mind and those thoughts are likely to come true.

It is important to change your mindset to a more positive approach. You should tell yourself "YOU CAN" then YOU WILL.

Take the above examples and look at the positive approach.

You can beat the 10 handicapper, you have more shots than they do, or they could have an off day, or maybe you will just play exceptionally well.

There are not many members of golf clubs who know all the rules, and if you think you are correct then you should challenge (in a polite way) and state what you believe to be right.

It's great to be young and confident, but that also can mean a lack of experience and course management skills.

If I think positively I will play positively.

You can get over water, it's just a question of the correct club choice and your attitude of mind.

Remember when you are on the course to motivate yourself, because your playing partner wont!!.

Bad shots should be forgotten, move on - you can't change what has been done. It's important to concentrate over each and every shot - don't allow yourself to be distracted. You don't know what the rest of the field is doing, so don't give up if you have a bad hole, or you're having a bad round.

Make sure that before you go out, you set yourself a target to achieve. It could be breaking 100, 90, 80. - getting a certain number of pars or in fact anything which motivates you to a better score.

Keep thinking positive and your game will improve. Every shot that you attempt should be will full concentration and positive commitment.
