A Quick Guide To Golf Championships

from: James Beckett

If you are trying to learn how to be a golf master, you must understand the essentials of the game, particularly the big golf competitions that happen every year. Just like a real basketball fan knows about the key NBA games and tournaments, and the Olympic championship game, any faithful golfing fanatic has to be knowledgeable about the most important tournaments.

The US PGA Tour is a collection of games that take place all over America. They last for most of the year and have a wide range of prizes and participants. There are qualifying events which allow you to play in the tour the next year and the actual matches take place throughout the year with major events distributed throughout the year.

One of the four majors, the PGA Championship is actually a part of the tour mentioned above. It is the final of the four major championships and is usually played in August time to round the year off. Winning this (or any other major) gives you a raft of invitations to all the big tournaments and exempts you from qualifying for this one ever again!

The Open Championship, The Masters, and U.S. Open are three additional major contests that are a part of the PGA Tour. Each competition is unique as far as credentials, playing settings, and rewards. Let's discuss each in turn:

The Masters Championship is strange in that it is always played on the same course, Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. The final round is scheduled for the second Sunday in April with a tricky par of 72. The course was opened in 1933 and has been played on ever since apart from during World War 2.

One of the most highly sought after prizes in golf (aside from the money is the distinctive green jacket that the winner of the Masters gets to wear. It is the official jacket of the club which the winner is then an honorary member of. They are supposed to give the jacket back after one year so that the club can hold onto it ready for when they play there next, but in 1962 Gary Player liked his so much he decided not to return it!

Each major seems to have their own quirks, and The quirk for the US Open is that it open to amateurs as well, and it allows men and women to play together. It doesn't even have a lower age limit so in 2006 a 15 year old from Hawaii qualified for the tournament!

The Open Championship, a.k.a. the British Open, is a golf competition thrown at varied golf venues in the United Kingdom. It is usually organized the third week of July. The record for total triumphs at the Open Championship is six, held by Harry Vardon, whose final appearance was in 1914. The Open is the first of all the most well-known golf competitions.

Choosing the right clubs is crucial to your game, read up here how to find the (http://ezinearticles.com/?What-Are-The-Best-Golf-Irons?&id=991713) best golf irons for your game.
