JUNIOR GOLF CLUB SETS

from:

Before you go to the 1st tee, be aware that there is a rule which specifies that a competitor may only carry 14 clubs in their golf bag. Which clubs, will depend upon how you intend to play, the course and the weather conditions.

When you have used a club in practice, you will be aware of the distance you can hit the ball with that club. Also you will be aware of the hight of the ball, this is controlled by the angle of the club or the loft.

Most clubs are identified for ease by a number and the higher the number the shorter the distance they can hit. The clubs are made of different materials designed to get the best performance for the player. They mainly consist of a rubber grip, a shaft which usually is graphite or steel and a club head made from either steel, alloys, tungsten or sometimes a mixture of all three.

Clubs can be divided into 3 types:-

* A Wood

* Irons

* Putters

THE WOODS

When golf was first played, the original players used clubs where the club head was made from wood, and this is how the name stuck. With the advent of ever changing technology club heads have changed both in shape and size and are today made from hard metals such as steel or tungsten.

* Junior woods can be anything from 1 though 9.

* Most juniors use the 3,or5, woods from the fairway.

* Some shots require a high loft from a poor lie and numbers 7 and 9 woods can be used here.

IRONS

Sets of Irons are numbered from 1 to 9 and are usually have club heads made from metal or alloys. The higher the number on the club the less distance the ball will travel. For example a 4 iron will hit the ball further than a 7 iron.

Pitching and sand wedges are also irons. These wedges have the highest loft and are generally used to escape from trouble such as bunkers or obsticles when fast height or stopping the ball quickly is a requirement.

PUTTERS

Putters, on which there is very little loft, are generally used on or just off the green when the ground is smooth and firm. There is a vast range of putters available to the golfer giving wide choice of shapes, weights and sizes. In fact there is no right or wrong putter and you should choose whichever give you the best results.

HYBRID/RESCUE CLUBS

Rescue or hybrid clubs have become very popular with golfers in recent years. With the characteristics of both a wood and an iron it is used mainly as a distance club and is useful when experiencing a tight lie. It is now an established tool in the range of clubs available.

TAKING CARE OF CLUBS

There is nothing more irritating than clanking clubs on a course, and head covers are available to prevent woods banging against other clubs and stop damage. It sensible to dry off woods when they are wet and that any mud, grass or sand is cleared away from the grooves.

The grips, which are rubber can be washed in soap and water when they get dirty. However shinny grips are worn out and need to be replaced, this can usually be done by your club professional.

HOW TO CHOOSE CLUBS

When you choose clubs there is a vast array available to you, but the most important thing is that you are comfortable and confident with them. There are lots of different brands claiming to do everything for you, but in the end its a personal choice.

Before you buy any clubs, its sensible to find an outlet that will allow you to 'try out' different types of clubs in order to help make up your mind.

Buying both irons and woods with the same manufacturing mark may not suit your swing or your game. You need to ask the question 'Do I need to buy them all at once?'. It can be helpful to purchase some and find out where the gaps are - adding in other clubs later as required.

Give some consideration to leaving out the purchase of a driver, which is not necessary when you are first starting. To start with you could choose a 3 or 5 wood. Also choosing a half set of irons to get some experience is a good idea. More can be added at a later date.

Some consideration should be given to purchasing a used set of junior golf clubs if you are just starting the game, this may save you money in the long run once you decide which clubs you get on best with.
